where to buy a cheap motorcycle in South america? say under $500?

just returned from a year travelling in asia on a motorcycle and loved it so am leaving in august for South America (destination undetermined as of yet)

is there a hub/capital where you can pick up a dirt cheap bike? in S.E.Asia most cities had a traveller’s area selling crap they didn’t want, i’m assuming it’s the same somewhere in SA

was thinking some kind of 125-250cc dirt bike/crosser

yes i know for the money i’m not going to get a show bike but i know my way around them and will happily fix parts along the way,

or is it a case of just chatting with the locals?

Since there are so many of them you can find used bikes in any small to large city. Ask around to the locals, but I would stick with dealers. Obtaining proper paperwork from an individual can sometimes be a real hassle. Cheap? That may be another story. And parts are not always that readily available. As far as hassle by the policia, when you cross every border you have to buy a temporary permit for your machine and as long as all the papers are in order, you likely will have no problems, even at one of their many roadblocks. I believe every country has helmet and closed toe shoe requirements now, and in many cases as long as you are wearing them, the policia will wave you on through.
