Get to Know Your Motorbike

Questions about having a bike in the US?

Hi guys. I am going to the US for my graduate education. I want to buy a bike. Here are a few questions.
1, Are 3000 dollars enough for an reliable used 600cc sport motorcycle such as yzf r6, CBR600 F4, zx-6r? (actually i was intended to go for a 1 liter sport bike, but maybe 1liter bikes are more expensive than 600cc bikes)
2, How much is the expense of keeping a 600cc bike compared with a car? (the insurance, the tax…)

Well, while bikes are considerably cheaper to purchase than cars, they can be a complete hassle to maintain. I, and friends of mine have all laid down our bikes at one time or another and repairing the plastics on sport bikes can run anywhere from $150-$600+. and tune ups (if you don’t do them yourself) can run you $100-$350, every 3,000 miles, and unless you are mechanically sound, I wouldn’t recommend doing them yourself. I also had to replace the gas tank on my Ninja recently, and that was almost $900.
Motorcycle parts are generally pretty expensive so just be prepared.
$3,000 for a 600cc might buy you a decent used bike. But aside from that I would also recommend that you DO NOT buy anything bigger than a 600cc for your first bike, I have never met anyone who started on a liter bike and was happy about their decision. the smaller the bike you learn on the better rider you become in the long run. A liter bike will have too much torque and too much speed for a novice rider, so seriously consider your options before making your decision.

As for Insurance, depending on your driving history insuring a bike can be severely cheap, or severely expensive. I live in Washington State, where you are not required to drive with ANY insurance whatsoever. Back when I started riding I was still living at home and State Farm Insurance allowed me to obtain the same rates as my dad for his bike through one of their programs and it ended up being $17 a month, which is piss cheap. On the other hand, in the last year and a half I got two speeding tickets, and to insure my bike now would cost me almost $3,700 a year.
So it all depends on the deals you can work out, and how much trouble you can stay out of.
I’m assuming your under 25 years old so to insure someone like you on a sport bike would most likely not be cheap by any stretch.
